A 10,000-step yoga journey starts with the first one

Do you know the saying, “The bad news is: time flies; the good news is: you’re the pilot.”?

This sums up my  yoga-teacher training at Yoga Space in Toronto.  I’m one full weekend away from finishing my 200-hour course.

Thanks to our anatomy training, I can name yoga’s key muscles and how to help a student adapt to receive a pose’s benefits.  Everything about yoga’s roots and its  philosophy was new to me.  All of us have taught a five-asana Vinyasa sequence. Many  have taught a section of a full Hatha class. We’ve signed up to teach community classes at the studio. My home practice continues to develop. Oh, and I need to complete my take-home philosophy exam.

The 15 weeks have flown by, but I’m thankful I’ve put my time to good use.

What’s been the biggest surprise about the course? I asked my classmates.  The consensus was how little we know and how much there is to know to be an excellent yoga teacher.

Classmate  Stephanie Kittell nicely summed it up: “The biggest surprise for me: realizing just how much I don’t know! It’s been a beautifully humbling experience in that regard. Though I’ve been practicing yoga for over 7 years (in various forms of asana, meditation, and pranayama), I feel like my practice has really only just begun.”

I’ve always been a life-long learner. I’m delighted to have taken my first steps on my 10,000-step yoga learning journey.  Since I know how fast time flies, I don’t plan to waste a minute.
